Spread across the waterfront, this wide panorama of Havana dates to about 1899, the year United States forces took control of the city after the Spanish-American War. The Russell Bros. studio of Anniston, Alabama, issued a number of these long-format views, and this one records a harbor that had long been the island's main port. Look toward the channel entrance to find the old Spanish fortifications, including Morro Castle, which guarded the narrow passage into the bay.
