Few buildings of the 1890s appeared in as many picture postcards and travel views as the Paris Opera, and this photochrom presents its façade and the open plaza before it. Charles Garnier's building opened in 1875 after nearly fifteen years of construction, and by the 1890s it stood as the centerpiece of the new boulevards laid out under Baron Haussmann. The photochrom process, developed by the Swiss firm Photoglob in the late 1880s, combined photographs with several color printing plates, giving city scenes a bright finish that suited travelers. The numbered catalog designation, No. 6935, marks it as one of the many views the company issued for sale.
