Cassandre's color lithograph sets the Arc de Triomphe and an obelisk side by side, pairing Napoleon's triumphal arch with the Egyptian monolith that stands in the Place de la Concorde. The arch, completed in 1836 after Napoleon ordered it built to honor his army, was one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city by the 1930s. The obelisk, a gift from Egypt that was raised in 1836, gave the city a link to ancient Egypt. Printed by the Paris firm Draeger, the poster reflects the interwar period, when French poster design was known for bold, stylized images that made travel and city life look modern.
