This photograph shows the Pavilion Richelieu, the wing of the Louvre that runs along the north side of the palace complex in Paris. The pavilion belongs to the large building campaign of the Second Empire under Napoleon III, when the old royal palace was joined to the Tuileries and rebuilt with a dense, ornamented façade. The caption card gives no date, so the exact year of the view is uncertain, but the wing's heavy stone detailing and mansard roofs are worth studying for their picture of mid-nineteenth-century Parisian monumental architecture. The card also carries unverified details, so it is best read as a starting point for further research.
