Few entertainers were as well known in Paris between the wars as Bricktop, the nickname of Ada Smith du Conge, whose name appears in this record. Her nightclub drew American expatriates, writers, artists and performers, and she became a fixture of the city's jazz-age nightlife. This 1934 gelatin silver portrait comes from Carl Van Vechten's extensive series of celebrity sittings, which he made for many of the leading figures of the Harlem Renaissance and the wider cultural scene of the period.
