Charles VII of France, who reigned from 1422 to 1461, is the subject of this reproduction of a painting, though the caption card gives no date for the print itself. Charles earned the nickname "the Victorious" for helping drive the English out of France during the Hundred Years' War, a turn in his fortunes that later painters and engravers liked to celebrate. The record notes that its data is unverified, so the sitter's identity rests on the caption, while the portrait tradition he belongs to is well documented.
