Pershing, the commander of the 1916 Punitive Expedition, appears in this photograph outside his tent at Namiquipa, a town in Chihuahua, Mexico, where his American troops were camped while searching for Pancho Villa. The expedition had crossed the border in March 1916 after Villa's raid on Columbus, New Mexico, and the record dates this view to around May 24 of that year. Field photographs like this one, taken at camp rather than in a studio, show the everyday routine of a campaign that never captured its target and that strained relations between the United States and the Mexican government.
