Looking east over the apse rail, this view takes in the carved chimaeras that line the upper parts of Reims Cathedral, a detail that sets it apart from broader views of the building's front. The cathedral, where French kings were traditionally crowned, was begun in 1211 and built over much of the 13th century in the Gothic style. It was badly damaged during World War I, and its restoration was a major effort in the decades that followed. The caption card does not give a date, so the photograph's exact age is unknown.
