Reims Cathedral, the Gothic church where French kings were traditionally crowned, is the subject here, seen from above after shelling damaged its roofs and towers during the First World War. The record dates the print only to the years 1914 to 1918, and its caption information has not been independently verified, so the exact date and vantage point remain uncertain. The cathedral sat in a city close to the Western Front, and German artillery hit it repeatedly during the fighting. Aerial views like this one were valued by military observers and later by the public, since they showed the scale of destruction to a building that many people regarded as a national monument.
