This group portrait of the 71st Regiment, posed around its color sergeant, differs from Roger Fenton's broader views of the Crimean camps because it fixes particular men of one unit at close range. Fenton worked in the Crimea in 1855, when the British army was besieging Sevastopol, and his camera recorded soldiers, officers and camp life at a time when photographs of the war were rare. The color sergeant carried the regiment's colors, so his place at the center of the group signals the honor attached to the flag.
