The soldiers in this print belong to the First Battalion of the First Regiment of Zouaves of the Imperial Guard, a unit of the Ottoman army in Constantinople, and the French caption on the album page names them directly. The Abdullah Frères studio, a well-known Istanbul photography firm that worked for the imperial court, made the albumen print sometime between 1880 and 1893, during the reign of Sultan Abdul-Hamid II. The zouave name comes from French North African infantry, and its adoption by the Ottoman army reflects the period's wider interest in European military dress and drill. The print is part of the sultan's photograph collection now held by the Library of Congress.
