The subject here is the flag of the Imperial Battalion of Navy Fusiliers, shown on its own rather than with the men who carried it. The print is an albumen photograph from the studio of Abdullah Frères in Constantinople, made sometime between 1880 and 1893, and it is captioned in both Ottoman Turkish and French. It belongs to a album of the Imperial Naval Academy and naval personnel in and around Istanbul, part of the Abdul-Hamid II Collection assembled for the sultan. Such photographs were valued as records of military ceremony and of the state's public image at a time when the Ottoman navy was modernizing.
