Few posters of the war years speak so directly to skilled tradesmen. This silkscreen print asks carpenters, machinists, and electricians to build for the Navy, a call aimed at men whose trades would be needed at the Navy's construction battalions, later known as the Seabees. Made under the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project in Pennsylvania between 1941 and 1943, it reflects the wartime push to fill skilled jobs as the country expanded its military and industrial base. The artist, R. Muchley, worked in the bold, flat color typical of WPA silkscreen posters, which were designed to be read quickly from a distance.
