Few WPA posters promote a skating party, but this 1936 silkscreen invites New Yorkers to a Halloween roller skating carnival on the Mall in Central Park. The record ties it to the Federal Art Project, one of the arts units of the Works Progress Administration, which used silkscreen to produce inexpensive public notices in bold flat colors. Its date stamp of October 20, 1936 suggests it was printed and circulated for a fall event. The subject tags note jack-o'-lanterns and a contest, so the poster likely pitched seasonal fun as a free or low-cost outing during the Depression years.
