Children gathering on the mall in Central Park for a final championship is the scene this poster promotes, a recreation event spread through the city's playgrounds. The notice tells young players to get an application and rehearsal dates from the playground director, and it names the Harmonica Institute of America as sponsor of prizes for borough winners, over the signature of Borrah Minevitch, the harmonica virtuoso who led the Harmonica Rascals. Issued by the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration in New York, it reflects the 1930s effort to fill public spaces with free community activity and to employ artists in making its publicity. A stamp on the back, dated April 16, 1937, places it in the spring of that year.
