The poster announces the final barbershop quartet concert of the season on the Mall in Central Park, a tree-lined promenade where the city's Park Department often staged outdoor performances. It was printed by silkscreen, a stencil method the WPA's poster program used to produce bold, flat areas of color in large runs at low cost. The Federal theater Project, one of the Works Progress Administration's arts divisions, sponsored the event, tying public recreation to federal support for live performance during the Depression. A date stamp on the back, September 12, 1936, helps place the poster near the close of that summer's concerts.
