Issued in 1941 by New York City's Department of Water Supply, Gas & Electricity under Mayor Fiorello La Guardia and Commissioner Patrick Quilty, this silkscreen poster asks residents to use no more kitchen water than necessary and presents the habit as a wartime duty. It was produced under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration, whose poster division made civic messages on silkscreen, a method suited to inexpensive runs in several colors. The appeal to household thrift during the war years shows how public agencies tied everyday habits to national defense and the shared effort on the home front.
