This WPA silkscreen poster, "Don't Waste Water," was sponsored by the Philadelphia Council of Defense and the City of Philadelphia Water Bureau, and it asks residents to conserve a resource in a city whose supply was under strain. It was made in 1941, when the United States was still months from entering the Second World War but defense production was already drawing heavily on local utilities and industry. The record names Raymond Willcox as the artist and notes the Federal Art Project as sponsor, tying the work to the New Deal program that employed artists to produce public-information posters. Its slogan-driven, color-blocked style reflects the silkscreen techniques the program encouraged for cheap, mass-produced civic messages.
