This 1941 silkscreen poster asks New Yorkers to skip the garden hose when washing the car, making a household habit into a wartime duty. It was issued under Mayor Fiorello La Guardia and the city's Department of Water Supply, Gas and Electricity, headed by Commissioner Patrick Quilty, and the Federal Art Project produced it under the Works Progress Administration. Conservation appeals like this one became common in the early 1940s, when the country was mobilizing for war and cities were asking residents to save resources. The poster's short, direct message and its screen-printed color show how WPA artists aimed simple instructions at a broad public.
