Its slogan, "For greater knowledge on more subjects use your library more often," addresses Chicago readers directly and treats the public library as a place for ongoing self-education. The poster was made under the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, which put artists to work during the Great Depression and produced many silkscreen posters promoting public services. Free libraries and adult learning were a natural subject for the program, since the WPA also supported library and education work across the country. The verso bears a stamped date of January 24, 1941, which shows the poster was still in circulation several years after it was printed.
