Recruiting for merchant seamen, this silkscreen poster urges workers to "increase your professional knowledge and skill" and points them to the U.S. Maritime Service, the training arm of the Maritime Commission. Congress created the commission with the Merchant Marine Act of 1936 to rebuild a American shipping fleet that had shrunk badly after World War I. The Work Projects Administration's poster division produced the design, and the stamp on the back, dated June 1939, shows the piece was still in circulation after its original printing. It is a useful look at how federal agencies used graphic art to sell training and steady work during the Depression.
