Few recruiting posters from the First World War name a single unit as directly as this lithograph does: the 199th Overseas Battalion, known as the Irish Canadian Rangers. Canadian Expeditionary Force battalions were often raised in a particular city or community, and posters like this one urged men to join a unit they could identify with by name and badge. The subject headings point to the insignia shown, which made each battalion recognizable at a glance. The poster was printed in Montreal by the Gazette Printing Company, and its color lithography reflects the wartime effort to fill battalion ranks.
