Few recruiting posters of the First World War appeal so directly to a single heritage as this one, which urges Irish Canadians to enlist in the 199th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, known as the Irish Canadian Rangers. The color lithograph, whose record names Nutter, pairs an appeal to ethnic loyalty with the wider national call to arms. Canadian units were often raised along regional, linguistic or community lines, and recruiters promised men they could serve alongside their own neighbors. The design shows how the CEF sought to fill its ranks by drawing on community identity as well as patriotism.
