Pioneer battalions were the engineering arm of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, and this 1916 recruiting poster for the 5th Overseas Pioneer Battalion presents practical labor as a form of war service. Its slogan, "To build anything, to fight anything," tells prospective soldiers they might be asked to build roads, bridges and defenses in Europe, and that the same men could take up a rifle when needed. The color lithograph highlights bridge construction, a trade the army valued, and it reminds viewers that the Western Front depended on skilled workers as much as on combat troops.
