The regiment named in this print's title, the Ertuğrul Cavalry Regiment of the Imperial Guard, was one of the mounted units that guarded the Ottoman court in Constantinople, and the name honored Ertuğrul, the father of the dynasty's founder, Osman. The print comes from the Abdullah Frères studio, a prominent Istanbul firm that photographed the palace and its military during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid II, roughly 1876 to 1909. Its album caption, numbered "No. 2," places it within a series documenting the cavalry and lancer regiments, and the albumen print reflects the period's standard method for producing detailed studio images of soldiers and horses.
