Few hotels in Havana drew as many American visitors as the Sevilla-Biltmore, and this view shows its public interior in the period when the city was a favorite winter destination for travelers from the United States. The photograph was taken by American Photo Studios, a commercial firm working in Havana, and it belongs to the Pan American Union collection, which gathered images of member nations for promotion of travel and trade. Interiors like this one were meant to show guests a hotel's lobby and furnishings, so the picture also records the decorative style and social setting that tourists were expected to find there.
