A sugar cane plantation on Oahu, with its fields and harvest work, is the subject here, which places the picture in Hawaii's plantation economy at the start of the twentieth century. By the 1900s, sugar was the dominant industry on the islands, and large plantations relied on a workforce recruited from Japan, China, Portugal, the Philippines and elsewhere, while cane was cut by hand and hauled to nearby mills. The record dates the print to between 1906 and 1916 and gives no photographer's name, so it is best read as a document of the labor and landscape of that period. Cane fields and harvesting crews are a recurring theme in photographs of the era, and this view adds to that record of agricultural work.
