Three men who had risen from slavery share this lithograph: Benjamin Sterling Turner, Frederick Douglass, and William Wells Brown, and the title traces a path from the plantation to national office. Turner was born enslaved in Virginia and later served in the U.S. House of Representatives from Alabama, one of the first Black men to sit in Congress. Douglass and Brown both escaped slavery and became influential writers and speakers against it. Published in New York around 1883, the hand-colored print reflects public interest in portraits honoring Black leaders in the years after Reconstruction.
