Titled for a Georgia plantation, this 1858 wood engraving shows workers picking cotton, the crop that made the South's economy and its export trade so central before the Civil War. It appeared in *Ballou's Pictorial*, an illustrated weekly published in Boston, which aimed its images at northern readers curious about life in the South. Pictures like this often reflected the assumptions of their makers more than the conditions in the fields, where the labor was performed by enslaved people. The record's details about its origin are unverified, so the engraving is best read as evidence of how plantation work was presented to the North on the eve of the war.
