Hand-picking cotton was the defining labor of Georgia's fields in the early twentieth century, and this c1907 view shows it at the level of the row. Cotton was the state's dominant cash crop, and workers moved down the rows filling sacks that were often dragged behind them. The photograph carries a copyright notice in the name of Marcus L. Brown of Decatur, Georgia, a sign that regional photographers made scenes like this for wide circulation. The date and details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified, so the image is best read as a document of its period.
