Unlike many mill scenes on this board, this one names its machine: a slubber, the frame that drew out and lightly twisted cotton roving before final spinning, with a young girl tending it at the Lincoln Cotton Mill in Evansville, Indiana. The picture dates to October 1908 and is attributed to Lewis Hine, who was then photographing factory and mill workers for the National Child Labor Committee to build a public case against child labor. Its caption card, which supplies the title, places the scene in southwestern Indiana at a time when many textile mills employed children on the floor.
