A boy working the drop wires at Granite Mill in Fall River, Massachusetts, is the subject of this June 1916 photograph. Drop wires are thin metal strips hung on a loom that fall when a warp thread breaks, stopping the machine so it can be repaired, so the job required close watch over moving equipment. Lewis W. Hine made the picture for the National Child Labor Committee, which used his images to press for laws limiting child labor in factories and mills. Fall River's cotton mills were among the largest in the country at the time, and the city was a focus of his investigations.
