Titled "Spare hands" on the National Child Labor Committee caption card, this June 1916 view shows boys at work inside Granite Mill No. 1 in Fall River, Massachusetts. Lewis Hine made it while documenting child labor for the committee, a campaign that used photographs like this one to push for limits on the work children did in factories. Fall River was one of the largest cotton-textile centers in the country at the time, and the title suggests the boys were kept on hand to fill in wherever a machine or shift needed them.
