A 14-year-old "back boy" stands in the mule room of the Berkshire Cotton Mills in Adams, Massachusetts, in this July 1916 photograph by Lewis W. Hine. Back boys worked behind the spinning mules, where they pieced together broken threads while the carriage moved, a job that kept children close to fast, dangerous machinery for long hours. Hine made pictures like this for the National Child Labor Committee, which used them to build public support for limits on child labor. The Keating-Owen Child Labor Act, which restricted interstate commerce in goods made by children, was signed later that same year.
