Jo Bodeon is identified here as a back-roper, a worker who tended the back rollers of the spinning mules in the mule room of the Chace Cotton Mill in Burlington, Vermont. The picture dates to May 1909, when the National Child Labor Committee was documenting conditions in American textile mills and factories. Spinning mules were large, noisy machines, and the back-roper's work of keeping threads running and rollers clean placed workers close to moving parts. Photographs like this one were used to argue for laws restricting child labor.
