Women picking cotton in Albania in 1956 make up the subject of this print, a scene of field labor that the country's postwar government promoted as part of its push to expand agricultural output. Under the communist leadership that came to power after World War II, collective and state farms were organized to raise yields, and cotton was among the crops grown in the lowland regions where conditions suited it. Photographs like this one were often used to show women taking an active part in productive work, a theme the government stressed as it sought to bring women into the workforce. The record names the photographer nowhere, so the image is best read as a document of its time and its official ideals.
