Cotton picking in Georgia is the subject of this stereograph card, which was made to be viewed through a stereoscope so that two nearly identical images merged into a single scene with depth. The card was published by T.W. Ingersoll of St. Paul, Minnesota, a firm that sold views of places and everyday work to home viewers in the late 1890s. Cotton remained the dominant crop across much of rural Georgia then, and picking it was done largely by Black workers under sharecropping and tenancy arrangements that often kept them in debt. Cards like this one record that labor while also showing how such scenes were packaged for a national audience.
