Cottonport, Louisiana, sits on Bayou Rogue, and this view shows the town with its houses standing in floodwater that came through a crevasse, a break in a levee. The picture was taken on May 21, 1927, during the great Mississippi River flood that spring, when levee failures inundated farmland and villages across the lower valley and forced hundreds of thousands of people from their homes. Photographer A.B. Tarver recorded the damage as one of a group of flood photographs assembled in an album. The image is worth studying for how plainly it shows the water reaching the front steps of ordinary homes.
