Issued as a postcard by H. Tees of West Point, Mississippi, this group portrait places a cotton planter among the pickers he employed around 1908. Cotton dominated the farm economy of the region, and by the early 1900s most Black field workers there labored under tenancy or wage arrangements that bound them closely to the landowner's accounts. Commercial cards like this were sold and mailed widely, so the arrangement of figures reflects how plantation labor was presented to outside viewers, with the planter at the center and the workers posed for the camera.
