Torches light a night scene on the Alabama River, where enslaved workers load bales of cotton onto a steamboat. The engraving, credited to W. H. Brooke and W. Floyd, appeared in volume one of James Silk Buckingham's *The Slave States of America*, published in 1842. Buckingham, a British traveler and writer, toured the southern states and wrote an account openly critical of slavery. Cotton was the region's leading export, and river steamboats carried it to market, so the picture links the commodity and its transport to the forced labor that made both possible.
