The title, "From the plantation to the Senate," points to the print's central idea: a rise from slavery to public office. Benjamin Sterling Turner, who was born enslaved in Virginia and later became one of the first Black men elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, from Alabama in 1870, is joined here by two abolitionist figures, Frederick Douglass and William Wells Brown. Douglass was a leading orator and writer who had escaped slavery, and Brown was a novelist and lecturer who had also escaped and whose work exposed the cruelties of the slave system. Printed in New York around 1883, the lithograph reflects a period when Black Americans and their supporters were recording and celebrating these achievements in portrait form.
