Hegel is the subject here, shown in a carte de visite reproduction of a painting by E. Hader, the artist credited on the card. The print was issued in Berlin in 1884 by the photographer and publisher Sophus Williams, who sold such cards of notable German figures to a wide public. Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770-1831) was a central figure of German idealist philosophy, and his lectures at Berlin in the 1820s made the city a focus of his thought. Photographic copies of his portrait like this one helped carry his likeness far beyond the lecture hall.
