Its German title, *New-York von der Seeseite aus gesehen*, reads "New York Seen from the Sea Side," and the subtitle, *Des Auswanderers Sehnsucht*, means "The Emigrant's Longing." The print shows the city from the water, the view that greeted ships arriving from Europe. Published in Berlin by J. Hesse in the 1850s, it spoke to a German public at a time when many families were leaving for American cities. Its color and high vantage point invited viewers to picture a destination they might never see. Notice how the crowded waterfront is presented less as a plain record of the port than as a promise of what lay ahead.
