A skeleton leads the dance in this Berlin poster, whose German title urges the city to stop and come to its senses because its dancer is death. Printed in 1919 by the Berlin firm Rand & Hartmann, it appeared in a city still reeling from Germany's defeat in 1918, the collapse of the empire, and the street fighting of the early Weimar period. The record ties the image to anti-communism, a theme that resonated with many Germans who feared revolution would bring further chaos. The skeleton, a familiar memento mori, turns the lively image of a dance into a stark warning.
