Spartakus bei der Arbeit," or "Spartacus at Work," takes its name from the Spartacist League, the radical group led by Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg that tried to seize power in Berlin in January 1919. The poster is a color lithograph from that year, when Germany was still reeling from the lost war and the revolution that followed it. Its subjects in the catalog record, violence, death and anti-communism, reflect how many Germans of the period saw the left-wing uprisings. Posters like this one helped shape public fear of communism in the early Weimar Republic.
