The title alone sets the tone: "Germany's Ideal Future under the Rule of the Bolshevik," with the sarcasm of "ideal" doing much of the work. The poster was printed in 1919, when Germany was reeling from defeat in World War I, the collapse of the monarchy, and the upheavals that followed. That year saw the Spartacist uprising in Berlin and short-lived Soviet-style republics in Bavaria, so fears of Bolshevik revolution were widespread on the political right. The subject headings point to the poster's core message, which pairs the wartime destruction of German cities with the political threat that many nationalists blamed for that ruin.
