The German headline, "Bayern der Bolschewik geht um! Hinaus mit ihm am Wahltag!" ("Bavaria, the Bolshevik is on the loose! Out with him on election day!"), makes the poster's purpose plain: it was sponsored by the Bavarian People's Party to steer voters against the left. It appeared in 1919, months after the short-lived Bavarian Soviet Republic was proclaimed in April and then crushed by Freikorps and army units in May. Fear of revolution ran deep among conservative and Catholic voters, and the poster shows how anti-communism was used as an election tool in the early Weimar period.
