*Bayern! Euerer Land steht in Flammen!* ("Bavaria! Your land is in flames!") is a 1919 color lithograph by Wera von Bartels, addressed directly to Bavarians. A pencilled note on the back places a copy at Kirchenlaibach station on 26 May 1919, a few weeks after government and Freikorps troops ended the Bavarian Soviet Republic in Munich. Posters like this one fed the fear that Bavaria was becoming a communist stronghold, and they show how anti-communism and the chaos of Germany's postwar years were tied together. The blazing landscape makes the warning immediate, even for viewers who cannot read the German text.
