This 1917 color lithograph invites New Yorkers to "Hero Land," a benefit event for the Belgian Children's Milk Fund opening November 24 at the Grand Central Palace. Germany had occupied much of Belgium since 1914, and American relief efforts sought to feed the children there. The subject headings note Belgian flags and traditional Belgian dress, motifs that signaled national identity and sympathy for a country under occupation. The poster shows how wartime charity appeals mixed a playful invitation with appeals to solidarity.
