A 1918 fundraising poster links two wars with one caption: "1778-1783 America owes France the most unalterable gratitude," followed by a pledge dated from 1917, when the United States entered the First World War. The design is signed L. Jonas and was issued for the American Ouvroir Funds, which supported workrooms that offered employment and relief to women and children in war-torn France. Its line "French comrade your children shall be as our children" presents American aid as a debt repaid to the nation that helped secure American independence. The poster's subject tags for military personnel, French casualties and graves also point to the human cost of the war in France.
